Do Horoscopes Lead You to Your Soulmate?

Astrology reveals the will of the gods.”

Horoscope Matching in Indian Marriages plays a vital role; has been playing since ancient times. Horoscope matching or also known as Kundali Matching is a ritual practiced since ancient times in India. Marriage is considered to be a holy union of a man and a woman. And it is strongly believed that this union is pre-destined and largely depends on a person’s planetary positions.

The primary purpose of Kundali Matching or Horoscope Matching is to ascertain that the couples will have a long, happy and peaceful marriage.
Before families and the prospective groom and bride meet to know each other better, their horoscopes or kundalis are exchanged and shown to the family pandit or an astrologer. Kundali is also known as Patrika, Janampatri, Janamkundali or Janmaakshar. It is nothing but a blueprint of a person’s life.

Kundali has 12 houses fixed. Each house represents an important aspect of one’s life. The first house represents one’s looks and physical appearance, the second house stands for finance, the third for one’s hobbies and skills, the fourth one for assets, mother, happiness quotient, the fifth indicates education, experience, love life and children, the sixth represents debt, diseases and enemies, the seventh specifies marriage, spouse, relationships, the eighth indicates lifespan and sudden incidents, the ninth stands for belief system, spirituality, religion, the tenth talks of karma, career and work-life, the eleventh house indicates ambition, income and profit while the last; the twelfth house stands for expenditure.

Also, the signs are fixed in a horoscope. Planets move through these houses and signs and accordingly the times in one’s life changes – sometimes at peak, sometimes low, sometimes full of success and sometimes full of tribulations. An accurate reading of horoscope by a knowledgeable Astrologer will help in knowing favorable and unfavorable times in one’s life. Accordingly auspicious events can be planned.

“Without astrology man treads, as it were, in the dim twilight of ignorance.”

— Luke Dennis Broughton

A kundali or a horoscope is a person’s birth-chart or an astrological diagram describing the planetary positions when the person was born. This planetary arrangement affects his or her entire life. The state, angle and position of the planets is determined by a person’s birthdate, birthtime and birthplace. This birth-chart helps to make future predictions, describe many aspects and events in one’s life and calculate his or her milestones. It also helps determine the compatibility between couples.

While matching kundalis of the prospective bride and groom, the astrologer checks how many Gunas or qualities/traits match from both the kundalis. Ideally all 36 Gunas should match. This ensures a successful, happy marriage. Also, one’s Rashi, Yoni, Nadi, Gana and many such minute aspects are studied and its compatibility checked. If all matches, then the Astrologer gives a green signal and further rites such as Engagement, Pre-wedding rituals and Wedding dates are fixed. All based on the favourable time indicated by the Kundalis of both – the bride and the groom.

“The starry vault of heaven is in truth the open book of cosmic projection…”

— Carl Jung

There are a few modern-day couples who do not believe in horoscope matching and astrology. Well, to each his own. Whether to believe in it or no, whether to get Kundalis matched or no and whether to consider a horoscope as a yardstick for determining the compatibility between couples is entirely subjective. As long as the bride and the groom and their respective families are on the same page and mutually agree either to consider or reject Kundali matching, all is well. The choice is entirely yours! 🙂

However, a popular quote goes like this:

“Astrology is like gravity. You don’t have to believe in it for it to be working in your life.”

— Zolar
